Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow! There have been some truly huge dumps this year with nearby ski hill, Mt. Washington, reporting the deepest base in all of North America. Snowfalls like this can often wreak havoc with Quadra Island’s power lines but the installation of a new 80KW diesel generator means that Gowlland Harbour Resort will never be without electricity.

Late season Chinook fishing has been absolutely, “On Fire”. At a time when Chinook returns typically start to tail off, we have seen great catches with some of the biggest fish of the year. With the Chum and Coho showing up in numbers, the wonderful Chinook fishing is truly a bonus.

For the second summer in a row lingcod fishing has returned to the Gowlland Harbour area (after a thirteen year closure). What better way to fill in those slack tide salmon fishing slow downs than jigging up a tasty lingcod or rockfish…Whatever you catch, the same care and commitment will be given to processing your fish. All catches are cleaned, vacuum sealed and frozen, then packed in airplane friendly wax boxes for your trip home.

Golfers rejoice. Gowlland Harbour Resort recently completed the installation of its all weather putting green. The green is already proving to be a hit with guests (judging from the raucous cheering). Challenging without being impossible, the green comes complete with a sand trap and chipping areas so you can practice all aspects of your short game. We have both left-handed and right-handed putters and wedges on sight so you Phil Mickelsons out there don’t have to feel left out.

Avid birdwatcher and Gowlland Harbour Resort groundskeeper, Maggie McCallum, spotted this immature brown pelican sunning itself on the GHR docks. Usually the brown pelican’s range goes no further north than central California, although individuals like this one will sometimes wander further up the coast. Maggie loves Quadra Island for its great bird watching, “We’re right on the migration route for a lot of species, you never know what you’re going to see next.”

Winter snowfalls on Quadra Island gave the resort a wonderful holiday feel. Cool but calm weather provided a welcome respite from the wet and windy November storms. Winter Chinook fishing has proven to be very productive with some fish reaching the 20 pound range. You just can’t beat a mid-winter meal of fresh salmon and Dungeness crab.

Reports of the strongest run of sockeye salmon in over 20 years have proven to be absolutely true. Areas such as Green Sea Bay and Chatham Point have provided none stop action for all five species of salmon, but the sockeye has been the most prominent catch. Regarded as the best tasting of all salmon, the sockeye is also a strong fighter that provides enjoyment from the hook-set to the dinner table.

The first month of our season has already flown by - and what a year this is shaping up to be.  All of the new additions to the lodge have been met with a great reception, including the new exercise facility adjacent to the lodge, and our new welded aluminum boats, built to provide the smoothest ride possible.  Fishing has far exceeded last year at this time, and the largest push of fish is still yet to come.  Congratulations to John Johnson for catching the biggest fish to date for our lodge in 2006, a beautiful 27lb Chinook Salmon.

The last groups of the 2005 season have finally headed home, and another fantastic season at Gowlland Harbour Resort is drawing to a close.  From fishing to sing-alongs, we had a little bit of everything at the resort this year.  Fishing remained solid right up until the last line was reeled in, and our guests are all going home happy.  The 2005 season was a huge success for our new resort, and re-bookings are already looking solid for next year!

The evenings have grown crisp here at Gowlland Harbour Resort, but the days remain hot and sunny.  Another busy month is drawing to a close, and so too depart many satisfied anglers.  Chum salmon fishing has been hot all month, with chums to 20 pounds or more being brought back to the dock daily.  Many groups also decided to take the time to head to one of the nearby golf courses for a round or two, as the weather is absolutely perfect to hit the links right now.

Well, August certainly was a busy month for us!  Guests from Vancouver to Texas to Hawaii chose Gowlland Harbour Resort as their fishing destination this month, and none were disappointed.  Chinook salmon to 30 pounds were brought back to the dock, along with a plentitude of scrappy pinks, delicious sockeye, and acrobatic coho.  Dinners continue to delight, as our chef has treated Gowlland Harbour Resort guests to unforgettable meals of salmon, prawns, crab, roasted chicken, and much more.

Our first groups of the season have come and gone, and a great time was had by all.  Guests spent some relaxing time on the water searching for salmon, and one group was treated to a visit by a large pod of orca whales while they were fishing!  The dinners were met with much acclaim, many guests were unable to restrain themselves from delicious second helpings.  Guests in future trips are looking forward to being able to enjoy our brand new hot tub and sauna, set on our spacious waterfront deck.
